PopCap Announces Bejeweled 3!

After more than 6 years PopCap Games has finally announced the sequel to Bejeweled 2.  Slated for an early December release the new game claims to elevate the “match-3″ category to a whole new level with stunning, high-def graphics, a bunch of new game modes and eleven mini-games.

Here’s a quote from co-founder and CEO of PopCap Games, Jason Kapalka.
“The challenge in creating a new version of Bejeweled is to innovate and keep it fresh and exciting without losing touch with the game-play that millions of people love. So we’re very careful when we make changes to the core game, which is why it can take so long! We’ve worked hard to make sure Bejeweled 3 retains the classic appeal of the earlier games while bringing a host of exciting new features to the table.”

Roads of Rome Preview

Coming to Club Casual September 27
Genre: Strategy / Sim
Developer: Realore
Publisher: Realore

by December M
Roads of Rome
is the latest game from Realore Studios (Jane’s Hotel, Ashton’s Family Resort) that will be available from September 27. I was privileged enough to have the opportunity to play this game prior to its official release date and the game certainly was full of surprises!

Essentially, Roads of Rome is a time management game, similar in feel and style to My Kingdom for a Princess, but with some bonuses not found in other games available. The premise is simple – build a road across Rome to appease Caesar. However the storyline is far more complex than that. You play Caesar’s favoured General Victorius and you are in love with Caesar’s daughter. You want to marry her, but Caesar catches wind of this and decides to send you out to build this mighty road in the hopes it will distract you from his child. Dutifully you set off and begin the tedious chore of doing his master’s bidding.

I recently had the pleasure of playing a trial of My Kingdom for the Princess 2, the most recent game in Nevosoft’s line up. Having played the last instalment of the franchise, I was expecting that there would be some of the old, mixed with some new. Did I get what I was expecting? Well, read on and find out.

Magic Encyclopedia: Moonlight Preview

Coming to Club Casual Games 25 August
Genre: Hidden Object / Puzzle
Developer: Go Games
Publisher: Alawar

by Ian Hannan
Magic Encyclopedia: Moon Light is the third title in Alawar’s Magic Encyclopedia series. Having not played the previous iterations, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised when the opening music began playing, and even more so by the dramatic opening cinematic sequence where we are introduced to Katrina, the protagonist of the story.

Magic Encyclopedia: MoonlightTaken to the world map at the start of the game, it becomes apparent that this is going to be one long adventure, so I buckle my metaphorical seat belt, and delve into the magic of Alawar’s latest creation.

Without any expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the mechanics of the game. This is composed of finding items, putting them together and using them to interact with objects on the screen. The game play is simple and easy to get your head around which is great for those new to the hidden object genre. You needn’t have played the previous titles either, as the story is new and doesn’t appear to run on from the previous title in too much depth. The only drama that is involved is in the story, and not in getting frustrated at the game. (Thank God!)

Preview: Plants vs Zombies

Coming to Club Casual –  3rd September

Plants vs. ZombiesI first heard a whisper that PopCap (Bejeweled, Peggle, Zuma) was developing a game about Zombies sometime in January 2008. A Zombie game? I was sceptical!

Preview – Smash Frenzy 4

Coming to Club Casual – June 10

Smash Frenzy 4I must admit that I haven’t closely followed the evolution of the brick buster genre. I have very fond memories of the good ole days of Arkanoid and Breakout so as I prepared myself for the latest game, Magic Ball 4, by Alawar Entertainment I was eagerly anticipating a trip down memory lane. I also figured that any game franchise that can survive three incarnations enough to make a fourth must at least be worth checking out.
